MEPZCEM Chamber Inc. or the Mactan Export Processing Zone Chamber of Exporters and Manufacturers was organized in 1984 in Mepz 1 with six (6) member companies. The first president of the organization is Mr. Rogelio Q. Lim, former General Manager of TMX Philippines, Inc. MEPZCEM started as a chapter member of EPZCEM or the Export Processing Zone Chamber of Exporters and Manufacturers. EPZCEM was organized in Bataan Export Processing Zone after the zone was established in the mid seventies. MEPZCEM is the first chapter formed outside Bataan Export Processing Zone and followed by the Baguio Export Processing Zone Chapter.
Today, the chamber has grown its membership to 140 companies and support groups and has expanded to other zones in Mez 2 and Cebu Light Industrial Park in Mactan, Cebu Business Park in Cebu City, MRI in Danao City, New Cebu Township One (NCTO) in Naga City, WCIP in Balamban, Cebu and PASAR in Isabel, Leyte. The organization aims to promote the general welfare of its member companies, their employees and the community where they are located. It is committed to the professional and effective delivery of business assistance services primarily to its members and the Cebu business community. It advocates for the simplification and decentralization of PEZA rules and procedure, spearheaded various projects on automation, energy and environment conservation and community relations.
As part of its corporate social responsibility to the community, it promotes various programs such as seaweed transplantation, tree planting activities and community outreaches with the seven (7) associations in the economic zones under its umbrella namely: Mepz Human Resources Assn (Mepz HRA), Mepz Purchasing Management Assn (Mepz PMA), Mepz Traffic Assn (Mepz TRA), Mez Security and Safety Council Inc. (Mez SSCI), Association of Mepz Controllers and Accountants (AMCA), Mez Facilities, Maintenance and Environmental Assn (Mez FAMEA) and Mez Information Technology (Mez IT).
In July 2001, Mepzcem adopted the Sudtongan Elementary School as the first school-beneficiary of its Adopt-A-School Project. Mepzcem have partnered with the Department of Education in Lapu-Lapu City Division and the local government of Lapu-Lapu City in initiating the Educational Partnership Program. Through the Adopt-A-School Project, it hopes to establish a continuing program with a system in place to rehabilitate the school in the areas of health, nutrition, education and infrastructure.
Another key event established in 2002 is the Pursuit of Excellence or POE Sharing Rally. This event is a venue where companies present their best practices with the aim of sharing and learning from one another. It also promotes healthy competition and camaraderie among its members. Companies from other economic zones in the country such as Cavite, Laguna and Baguio were also invited to share its company’s best practices. This event is held regularly every two years and we will have POE once again later on this year.
MEPZCEM has partnered with PEZA in seeking solutions to support the various requests by our locators such as cheaper and more reliable power, adequate water supply, 24×7 regular support by Customs and other agencies. Various automation projects such as AEDS and AIP was implemented quickly and swiftly with the enthusiastic participation by MEPZCEM members.
MEPZCEM, through its associations have been very active in relief efforts for disaster victims most recent of which are the Bohol earthquake and Yolanda super typhoon in 2013. Hundreds of volunteers participated with various companies and associations forgoing their yearend parties to fund the effort.
Other activities of the organization are the yearly Sportsfest, ERT competition, seminars, Mepzcem Fun Run, etc. The sole objective of these activities is bringing about unity among its members and to promote strong relations with its business partners. Funds raised in these yearly events are used in its community outreach projects such as adopt-a-scholar program, etc.
Mepzcem has a succession of energetic and dedicated leadership in Glenn S. Westerman and Paul Fluty of Lexmark International Philippines, Inc., and Robert Oliver of TMX Philippines, Inc. who is the current president of the organization.
MEPZCEM envisions itself to be the leading, dynamic and progressive chamber in Region VII, Philippines, committed to the professional and effective delivery of business assistance services primarily to its members and the Cebu business community.
It envisions to responsively and meaningfully contributes to the economic and social well being of Cebu.
1. To promote and undertake programs and projects which are relevant to the growing and changing needs of Mactan and Cebu business community.
2. To ensure a mature and professional chamber organization serving as the nerve center in region VII.
3. To promote harmony among its multi-national members and their general business interest.
4. To promote industrial peace in the zone and advocate its adherence to ethical business standards among its membership.
5. To participate in programs and projects that contributes to the upliftment to the quality of life in Mactan and Cebu.
6. To promote and institutionalize linkages with Cebu business community & other local and foreign organizations.
